BREAKING: black holes can only grow!

Exciting scientific news: one of Stephen Hawking’s theories has been verified for the first time thanks to precision observations made with LIGO, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. The gist: black holes can only grow.

This is also good news for the Einstein Telescope. “Our” telescope will be the European successor to the current network of gravitational wave detectors. To quote our partner, Professor Thomas Hertog of the Leuven Gravity Institute: ‘Observations with the Einstein Telescope will not only enable us to determine the properties of black holes with great accuracy, but also to map the entire history of the universe, right back to our deepest roots at the Big Bang. Echoes of the Big Bang from our own backyard…!’
