New report compares Einstein Telescope design options

We have received the “Geometry Comparison Report” from the Einstein Telescope Organisation (ETO). The report is the outcome of an intensive dialogue which drew on the scientific ET Collaboration, the Host Consortia (including the Euregio Meuse-Rhine) and external organisations such as CERN, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). In total, more than 280 editors, analysts, experts and reviewers took part in this collective exercise.

The Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR) appreciates the work done by ETO to come to this comprehensive report. As requested by the Board of Governmental Representatives (BGR), they assessed the two design options for the Einstein Telescope – a single-sited triangle and two physically separated L-shaped detectors –against five criteria: scientific added value, lifetime cost, risks, governance and socio-economic & environmental impact.

Studying the findings

We will carefully study the findings, the underlying considerations, and their implications for the EMR. In the meantime, we are finalising the feasibility study for the triangular configuration and deepen the assessment of the feasibility of an L-configuration in the EMR.
