Deep drilling in Julémont

In order to obtain more information about the deeper soil layers and vibration sensitivity caused by industry or roads, for example, for the Einstein Telescope, deep drilling will soon start in Julémont in the municipality of Herve. The location is in the outskirts near Asse.

This drilling is the second in a series of five planned drillings. The first is currently underway in Beusdael (municipality of Plombières). The locations of the other drillings have not yet been determined.

Measuring vibrations

In Julémont, the deep drilling will reach a depth of 350 metres. A fibre optic cable will be installed in the borehole to measure vibrations from the surrounding area. The Einstein Telescope can only function properly when there are as few vibrations as possible from traffic and industry, among other things.

Viewing opportunities

Agreements have been made with the owner of the site and the municipality of Herve regarding permission and licensing aspects. No special (traffic) measures are required. Special equipment will be used to capture and neutralise any nitrogen released.

Local residents have been informed about the drilling. One or two viewing opportunities will be arranged for interested parties. As soon as the dates and times are known, they will be posted on this website at Viewings.

Planning

The Belgian drilling company Smet Group, in collaboration with the German company Daldrup, will start preparing the site this week. According to the current schedule, drilling will start on 14 July. Setting up the site, the drilling itself and then clearing the site will take 10 to 14 weeks.
