New government of Belgium embraces Einstein Telescope
Belgium’s new Federal Government also supports developments to enable the construction of the Einstein Telescope in the border region of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In the coalition agreement of the coalition led by Prime Minister Bart de Wever, the telescope is specifically mentioned twice.
The so-called Arizona coalition formed late last week consists of the parties N-VA, MR, Les Engagés, Vooruit and CD&V.
Support from the federal government
As part of what is mentioned about science policy, it states that ‘the Federal Government supports, within its areas of competence, the Belgian bid to build the Einstein Telescope, together with the Netherlands and Germany.
Cross-border infrastructure agenda
Where ‘open strategic autonomy’ is concerned, the Federal Government finds in its coalition agreement that ‘together with neighbouring countries and in consultation with the federal states, we are committed to a (European) cross-border infrastructure agenda, with in particular energy and hydrogen corridors, digital and transport networks (3RX) and the Einstein Telescope.’
Minister Vanessa Matz
Vanessa Matz is the Belgian federal minister who will have the Einstein Telescope in her work package. The Liège-based ministeress will be responsible for the ‘modernisation of government’ portfolio.
